Tunhuang (Dunhuang) is an oasis in the province of Kansu in northwestern China where famous caves were discovered in 1900 from the 5th century known by the name Mo-Kao-ku. Over 40,000 written Taoist and Confucianist scrolls where excavated along with paintings, ritual implements and one of the oldest ink drawings of a mandala known to us (9th-10th century).
